After
serving eighteen months in Newark State
Penitentiary in order to secure his
cover, Vinnie Terranova meets with Frank
McPike, his new field supervisor. (Although
they initially do not care for each
other, the two men eventually grow quite
close.) Vinnie then meets with Stan
Dermot, his original training officer
and learns that Dermot is working on
an assignment to "bring down" reputed
mobster Dave Steelgrave. Regrettably,
Steelgrave kills Dermot instead. In
order to get evidence proving Steelgrave
was behind Dermot's murder, Vinnie insists
on being assigned to the case. Then,
after meeting with his brother Pete
(who knows Vinnie's true occupation),
Vinnie arranges to get a Job at a restaurant
frequented by Sonny Steelgrave, Dave's
brother. Once at the restaurant, Vinnie
purposely involves himself in an altercation
with Sonny. As a result, Sonny challenges
Vinnie to an old fashioned fistfight.
Although Vinnie ends up losing the fight,
his courage in facing off against a
Steelgrave earns him a Job as Sonny's
driver. Later, when Vinnie shows up
at the Diamond Casino, the front for
the Steelgrave brothers illegal operations,
Vinnie meets Tracy Steelgrave, Dave's
law student daughter. Although their
initial meeting is brief, it does set
the foundation for a possible relationship.
However, Vinnie instead concentrates
his attention on Sonny. After Sonny
arranges for Vinnie to use a loft in
the casino, he takes his new driver
along to a business meeting with a mobster
named Gravedigger Jones, At the meeting,
Sonny convinces a reluctant Jones to
pay fifteen thousand dollars as payment
for conducting business in Steelgrave
territory. Gravedigger then has his
men follow Sonny and Vinnie. Realizing
that they are being followed, Sonny
and Vinnie prepare a welcome for their
pursuers. Therefore, they soon overcome
Gravedigger's men. Vinnie then further
endears himself to Sonny when he decides
to steal some money and Jewelry from
Gravedigger's defeated men. Later, Sonny
asks Vinnie and Jerry Greco (who has
been running a local pier for the Steelgraves)
to investigate why a man named Winfield
is conducting unauthorized business
on the pier. Thereby, Greco and Vinnie
kidnap Winfield and take him to a local
amusement park. Then, while Vinnie waits
outside, Greco takes Winfield into a
shack located under a rollercoaster.
Unfortunately, when Greco's interrogation
results in Winfield's death, the mobster
tries to pin the blame on Vinnie. An
upset Dave Steelgrave, who only wanted
Winfield questioned but not killed,
soon orders Vinnie and Greco to dispose
of the body. Vinnie is then placed in
an awkward position when a couple of
hostile police officers pull over their
car. In order to prevent Greco from
panicking and shooting the officers,
Vinnie rams the police car and flees
from the scene. Vinnie's next step is
to search Dave Steelgrave's office.
However, his search is interrupted by
the arrival of Tracy Steelgrave. Tracy
and Vinnie then decide to spend some
time with each other. Unfortunately,
while they are walking outside the casino,
Vinnie is arrested for his earlier run-in
with the police. Vinnie then instructs
Tracy to call his Uncle Mike. (In order
to not jeopardize his cover, Vinnie
refers to Lifeguard as Mike Terranova,
the proprietor of Sailor Hardware.)
As a result, Frank meets Vinnie in prison
and advises the OCB agent to arrange
for an expensive lawyer to get out of
jail as any federal interference would
jeopardize his cover. Meanwhile, the
Steelgraves discover that Winfield was
using the pier to transport automatic
weapons. After, being released from
prison, Vinnie uses some information
from Lifeguard and learns that Winfield
was dealing with an arms dealer named
Sykes. Vinnie then sets up a meeting
between Sykes and the Steelgraves. Although
Sonny is impressed with Vinnie's ingenuity,
Greco begins to suspect there is more
to Vinnie then meets the eye. While
Sykes is meeting with the Steelgraves,
Vinnie becomes suspicious of a noise
he hears in an adjoining room. Then,
when Vinnie is on his way to investigate,
Sykes men send a barrage of gunfire
into the meeting room. Thereby, Dave
Steelgrave is killed and Sonny is hospitalized.
Afterwards, Vinnie questions how Greco
conveniently disappeared during the
shooting. Adding to Vinnie's suspicions
is the fact that, before dying, Winfield
had claimed to have paid Greco for the
use of the pier. Vinnie then meets with
a recovering Sonny and informs the mobster
how Sykes will be asking for a follow
up meeting since the weapons in the
crates had been replaced with rocks.
Sonny is pleased with Vinnie's latest
example of ingenuity but distrustful
of how Vinnie walked away from the shooting
unharmed. In order to direct Sonny's
accusations in a different direction,
Vinnie arranges for Lifeguard to deposit
$10,000 (the amount Winfield claimed
to have paid to use the pier) into Greco's
bank account. As a result, Frank and
Vinnie are able to convince Greco to
join the witness protection program
in order to escape Sonny's wrath. Later,
at the pier, Sykes 's men attack only
to be repelled by Vinnie and Steelgrave's
men. Vinnie then bids farewell to Tracy
Steelgrave at her father's funeral.
Before leaving town, Tracy, feeling
regret over her relationship with her
late father, advises Vinnie to resolve
his difference with his mother. (Carlotta
still believes her son is really a mobster.)
After the funeral, Sonny gives Vinnie
his final test: He orders Vinnie to
kill a federal agent that has been bothering
him. In order to gain Sonny's trust,
Vinnie agrees. Unbeknownst to Sonny,
however, the agent's murder is faked
by Frank and, in order to secure Vinnie's
cover, the agent is located to another
part of the country. As the episode
ends, Sonny promotes Vinnie and gives
him all of Greco's former responsibilities.

As
the episode begins, Sonny is coping
with the loss of his brother as well
as the harassment of a prosecutor named
Anthony Serrera. Additionally, Paul
"Pat the Cat" Patrice, the mobster controlling
New York's organized crime, sets his
sights on Sonny's Atlantic City territory.
Patrice, under the guise of friendship,
soon meets with Sonny. The New York
mobster then offers to help Sonny compensate
for Dave's recent departure. Reluctantly,
Sonny is pressured by the situation
(and the fact that some of the neighboring
mobsters have an interest in his business)
to accept Sid Royce, one of Patrice's
men, as an accountant. Since Patrice
has placed a man in the Steelgrave operation,
Philadelphia mobster Mack Mahoney then
sends his own man: Harry "The Hunchback"
Schanstra. Fortunately for Sonny, Harry,
who is the mob equivalent of an historian,
is relatively harmless. (Harry does
however provide Vinnie with an interesting
perspective into the history of the
mob.) On the other hand, Patrice has
Sid begin working on destroying Sonny.
Patrice's plan soon unfolds when a sniper
takes a shot at Serrera. Sonny, who
was standing on a nearby balcony, is
then accused of the unsuccessful assassination
attempt when the assassin drops the
rifle into his hand. Realizing that
Sonny's incarceration may inhibit the
OCB's attempt to bring down the entire
criminal organization, Vinnie arranges
for Frank to have Sonny released from
prison. However, Frank's actions are
unnecessary for Sonny cuts his own deal
to get out of jail. Regrettably, the
ordeal threatens Vinnie's cover when
the OCB agent appears to be lying when
the police question whether or not he
works for Sonny. Fortunately, Vinnie
convinces Sonny that he only failed
the police lie detector test because
he was nervous. Then, in order to prevent
himself from being reframed, Sonny decides
to stop the assassin from making another
attempt on Serrera's life. Utilizing
his skills, Vinnie soon learns that
the assassin is working out of a pizza
shop across from Serrera's office. Sonny
and Vinnie then pay a visit to the home
of Angelo, the suspected assassin. Their
worst fears are soon confirmed when
they find proof that Angelo has constructed
a bomb. Sonny and Vinnie then head to
Serrera's office. Then, when Sonny takes
out his anger on a remote control device
he found in Angelo's house, Angelo's
bomb goes off and the assassin is killed
while still on the elevator in Serrera's
building. Later, a cleared Sonny warns
Sid that he knows the accountant was
behind the attempted frame.

In
what could have been a happy occasion,
Sonny's nephew Lorenzo, who he has not
seen in sixteen years, arrives in Atlantic
City from his native Sicily. However,
Sonny soon regrets his nephew's arrival
when an unstable Lorenzo gets in arguments
with everyone including Vinnie. The
problem escalates and Sonny finally
throws Lorenzo out after an incident
involving a local gang. (Lorenzo decides
to deal with the gang without checking
with Sonny first.) Meanwhile, Vinnie
has become involved with Gina Augustina,
the widow of a deceased police officer.
Although Vinnie does not reveal that
he is an undercover agent, she begins
to suspect his true occupation. (Among
her clues is the fact that Vinnie tosses
his coffee lid onto the dashboard of
his car, a habit common to police officers
on stakeouts.) However, based on his
current situation, Vinnie feels that
it would be best if he ended his relationship
with Gina. Unfortunately, Lorenzo, who
does not care for the treatment he had
received from Vinnie, soon decides to
revenge himself on the undercover operative
by kidnapping and raping Gina. In the
meantime, Vinnie learns from Frank that
the man claiming to be Lorenzo is actually
a Sicilian bandit who killed Sonny's
real nephew back in Italy. Vinnie soon
catches up to the Lorenzo imposter in
Gina's apartment. The imposter, who
had learned Vinnie is a federal agent
from a letter Gina wrote, then tries
to use his knowledge to force Vinnie
into letting him go. Vinnie, realizing
he can not trust the Sicilian, refuses.
Then, when he tries to take away Vinnie's
gun, the "Lorenzo" imposter is killed.
Afterwards, Vinnie, knowing from Pete
that Gina is trying to call him, refuses
to answer his phone. Despite the emotional
pain, Vinnie decides that he has no
choice but to end the relationship.

As
the episode begins, Vinnie and Sonny
are enjoying a boxing match featuring
Danny Tessio, Vinnie's cousin. However,
Sonny's enjoyment of the fight is interrupted
by a sleazy man named Kiki Vanno who
wants to set up a business meeting between
Steelgrave and a mobster named Michael
Zaratzo. Sonny agrees to meet with Zaratzo
for a one million dollar consulting
fee. Thereby, Zaratzo and Sonny arrange
a deal whereby Steelgrave will help
the other mobster transport some merchandise.
Unfortunately, the night takes a tragic
turn when Danny is found dead, the victim
of an apparent drug overdose. Regardless
of the evidence, Vinnie and Angela,
Danny's wife, are convinced that the
young boxer was not involved with drugs.
Therefore, Vinnie decides to prove that
Danny was murdered. In fact, Vinnie
is so intent on finding Danny's killer
that he even technically violates his
cover by flashing his OCB badge in order
to get information from the local police
department. In order to get Vinnie back
on track, Frank has Vinnie arrested.
Frank is then able to speak with Vinnie
in private and the two men soon make
a deal: Frank will help investigate
Danny's death if Vinnie concentrates
on uncovering evidence against Zaratzo.
(The OCB believes Zaratzo is responsible
for the death of a federal agent.) Frank
soon upholds his end of the bargain
when he picks up Leon Perez, a drug
addicted boxer who was seen with Danny
before the fight. Frank then learns
that Kiki Vanno is behind Danny's death.
Meanwhile, Vinnie is representing Sonny's
interests as Zaratzo merchandise is
routed through a crooked customs official.
Thanks to some information from Vinnie,
the OCB closes down the operation. Later,
Sonny bails Vinnie out of Jail (as Vinnie
was "arrested" with Zaratzo) and explains
that he is glad to be rid of Zaratzo.
Sonny further explains that Vinnie's
"arrest" will be tied up in the courts
for year. Then, in a chilling ending,
Sonny provides Vinnie with his birthday
present: the dead body of Kiki Vanno,
Danny's killer.

Vinnie
and Harry are supervising the movement
of some merchandise at Steelgrave's
pier, when the police move in and
close down the operation. Back at
the Diamond Casino, Sonny is upset
that he has lost two operations in
the past month. Thereby, Sonny begins
to suspect that the police have planted
a man inside his organization. Taking
advantage of the situation, Sid begins
to make accusations against Vinnie.
(In fact, Vinnie was not responsible
since these minor arrests actually
jeopardize the overall OCB investigation.)
Meanwhile, Vinnie meets Karen Leland,
a fundraiser for a local ballet and
the two begin to develop a relationship.
That night Vinnie is awakened in the
middle of the night and brought to
Sonny. Sonny then questions why Vinnie
has a driver's license from Quantico,
Virginia, the place where government
agents are trained. Vinnie defends
himself by explaining that he used
to smuggle cigarettes and actually
has driver's licenses from various
parts of the country. Vinnie further
defends his case when he points out
that even Sonny has items in his wallet
that can lead to mistaken conclusions.
Fortunately, Sonny accepts Vinnie's
story. In order to prevent Vinnie
from any further risks, Frank decides
to speak to Chief Yates, the head
of the Atlantic City police department
in hopes of learning who is providing
the police with information on Steelgrave's
operation. Regrettably, Yates refuses
and Frank is then forced to consider
pulling Vinnie off of the Steelgrave
case. In the meantime, Vinnie pursues
his relationship with Karen. Unfortunately,
the OCB undercover agent is soon shocked
to learn that Karen is having an affair
with Sid Royce. However, Sid's attentions
are not only directed to Karen as
the accountant soon arranges to have
Frank kidnapped and tortured into
revealing the name of the informant.
With Lifeguard's help, Vinnie soon
learns that Karen is actually an Atlantic
City police officer. Vinnie then confronts
Karen. Based on some information Karen
had overheard, Vinnie soon rescues
Frank from a torturer known as the
Electrician. Karen's future is not
as bright as Frank's, however, for
Sid soon learns Karen's true identity
from a crooked payroll clerk. Although
Sid takes care of the problem by having
Karen killed, Sonny does not let Sid
forget that he was responsible for
the original problem. Meanwhile, Vinnie,
having become attached to Karen, is
horrified to learn of her death.

While
on a shopping trip in her native Brooklyn,
Carlotta Terranova is mugged. Unfortunately,
a broken arm as well as a weak heart
soon lands her in the hospital. Back
in New Jersey, Vinnie is quite upset
to learn of her condition. Sonny, displaying
a concern for Vinnie's family that defies
his reputation as a mobster, pulls out
all the stops in offering Vinnie all
the support he needs to care for his
mother. Thereby, Vinnie borrows Sonny's
helicopter arid flies to Brooklyn. However,
Carlotta, still believing that Vinnie
is a mobster, refuses to see her son.
Vinnie then decides to find out who
is responsible for his Mother's misfortune.
Vinnie begins his investigation by staking
out the local neighborhood. He soon
follows some local gang members as money
passes from hand to hand until it is
placed into the trunk of a car. Regrettably,
Vinnie eventually loses track of the
car. Meanwhile, OCB Regional Director
Daryl Elias (who gave Vinnie grief back
when he was supervising Vinnie's release
from prison) orders Frank to make sure
that Vinnie does not blow his cover
by revealing his OCB status to Carlotta.
Back at the hospital, Carlotta refuses
to accept Sonny's money in order to
be transferred into a nicer room. Still
prevented from seeing his mother, Vinnie
decides to head back to Atlantic City.
The OCB agent is then shocked to discover
that the car full of ill-gotten gain
is being transported back to Sonny in
Atlantic City. Vinnie then realizes
Sonny's true duality: The mobster will
go to all extremes in providing for
his friends and family. However, in
an attempt to eat away at Patrice's
territory, Sonny is also responsible
for the injury of other people's families.
Upset with the entire situation, Vinnie
then decides he has no choice but to
tell his mother the truth. Upon seeing
her son's badge, Carlotta is overjoyed
and mother and son are finally reunited.
Sonny soon arrives in Brooklyn and asks
to see Carlotta. Then, in an acting
job worthy of the most experienced OCB
agent, Carlotta preserves Vinnie's cover
during a wonderful interchange whereby
she speaks of Vinnie's loyalty. (Carlotta
even justifies her refusal to accept
Sonny's money by claiming that she feels
she needs to stand on her own.) Frank,
who had taped the various interchanges
in Carlotta's hospital room, is then
faced with a difficult decision regarding
Vinnie's violation of OCB regulations.
Frank finally decides to protect Vinnie
and the OCB field supervisor presents
Elias with a Lifeguard doctored tape
that seems to indicate that Vinnie did
not tell his mother about the OCB.

Johnny
Romanowski, an aging singer, finally
has a hit song. Unfortunately, Johnny,
under contract to Sonny, is unable to
pursue his career. Hoping to get some
outside assistance, Johnny goes to Mahoney
to get some help in canceling his contract.
Regrettably, Johnny's actions only increase
Sonny's anger. Despite Vinnie 's objections,
Sonny then decides that an example needs
to be made of Johnny. At the same time,
Sonny also becomes re-involved with
Theresa Baglia, the daughter of retired
mobster Don Baglia. An example is soon
made of Johnny when Jack Phillips and
Tony Henard, two crooked cops on Sonny's
payroll, rough up the singer. Unfortunately,
the two officers go too far and Johnny's
voice box is crushed, thereby ending
his singing career forever. Upon learning
of Johnny's condition when delivering
a message for Sonny, Vinnie informs
Frank of the situation. Frank is then
suspicious of the two police officers
when he notes that they filed a report
stating that Johnny's wounds were self-inflicted.
The two cops in turn decide to investigate
Frank. As a result, they soon obtain
a picture of Frank meeting with Vinnie.
Fortunately, Henard decides to go to
Frank first. Phillips, learning of Henard's
actions, then kills his colleague. Meanwhile,
Don Baglia decides that Sonny needs
to formerly induct Vinnie into the "family."
The assorted plot points soon collide
when Sonny agrees to meet Phillips about
the photos after the induction. (Sonny
is not yet aware of what the pictures
reveal.) Vinnie's cover is then protected
when Johnny arrives on the scene and
kills Phillips for destroying his voice.
In an ironic scene, Frank is then forced
to shoot Johnny when the singer tries
to kill Sonny. Fortunately, the incident
allows Frank to replace the pictures
of him meeting with Vinnie with doctored
pictures of him meeting with Patrice.

Sonny
pursues his relationship with Theresa
Baglia and the two of them soon plan
on getting married. Meanwhile, Sonny
also decides to deal with the Patrice
problem. (Patrice, trying to deal with
his concerns about Sonny aligning himself
with the Baglias, has increased his
efforts to destroy the New Jersey mobster.)
Therefore, Sonny and Vinnie pretend
to have a public falling out. As expected,
Sid contacts Patrice about the situation.
Patrice soon meets with Vinnie. At the
meeting, Patrice inquires as to whether
or not Vinnie would consider switching
teams. Vinnie then learns that Mahoney
is also working with Patrice. Vinnie
soon reports back to Sonny. Sonny then
decides that the best way to keep an
eye on Patrice is to make the New York
mobster his best man. After a follow-up
meeting with Patrice, Vinnie learns
that the mobster is planning on killing
Sonny at Steelgrave's bachelor party.
Vinnie then updates Frank on the situation.
However, Frank informs Vinnie that the
OCB can not afford to let Sonny learn
about the plot. Vinnie agrees and in
return Frank promises that cameras will
be placed throughout the hotel and government
agents will make sure that Patrice is
not able to kill Sonny. Guilt ridden
over his role in "betraying" Sonny,
Vinnie soon goes to his mother for advice.
Carlotta helps Vinnie through his indecision
by pointing out that some good qualities
Sonny may display do not compensate
for all the evil the mobster is responsible
for. The night of the bachelor party
arrives. Unfortunately, the party soon
takes a deadly turn when Sonny murders
Patrice and locks Sid Royce inside a
closet. Vinnie then realizes that, thanks
to some information from future brother-in-law
Aldo Baglia, Mahoney (who was only pretending
to work with Patrice) as well as some
of the other guests, Sonny was aware
of the plot against his life. As the
episode ends, Sonny wants to know why
Vinnie failed to inform him about Patrice's
plot.

Continued
from last episode... While Sonny confronts
Vinnie about the OCB agent's apparent
betrayal, Aldo takes Patrice's body
and prepares to dispose of it. Aldo
then leaves Sonny and Vinnie alone.
(The other bachelor party guest had
left the room during the end of the
previous episode.) Thereby, Sonny
has the opportunity to taunt Vinnie
about the consequences of his actions.
However, Sonny soon sees Vinnie in
a new light when Aldo calls from a
car phone and informs Steelgrave that
the police are heading to the hotel.
Sonny therefore realizes that Vinnie
is an undercover operative. In order
to stay out of Jail, Sonny then steals
a car and flees the scene. "Borrowing"
a vehicle, Vinnie pursues the escaping
mobster. The car chase soon ends in
a closed down theater. Meanwhile,
Frank and the police arrive at the
hotel and Baglia, Mahoney, Harry and
the other criminals are taken into
custody. Frank also arrests Royce.
However, Sid's arrest involves some
special care for, while locked in
the closet, the mob accountant overheard
Sonny accusing Vinnie of being a "cop".
Back inside the theater, Vinnie and
Sonny become involved in a bloody
fistfight. Afterwards, Sonny and Vinnie
have a deep philosophical discussion
regarding right and wrong. As the
police approach the theater, Sonny
still clings to the possibility that
he will be able to make some form
of deal with the authorities. However,
after Vinnie reveals that the OCB
has a video of Sonny murdering Patrice,
the mobster realizes he will probably
get a death sentence. Deciding to
end his own life instead, Sonny then
jumps into an electrical panel and
commits suicide; but not before letting
Vinnie know how betrayed he feels.
As the episode and arc ends, Frank
is then forced to "arrest" Vinnie
in order to preserve the undercover
operative's cover.

Plagued by his actions in the demise
of Sonny Steelgrave, Vinnie begins
to have nightmares about betrayal.
Meanwhile, Nick Lucci, an old friend
of Vinnie's, goes to Father Pete
Terranova to get the last rites.
As this ceremony is only performed
on people that are dying, Pete questions
Lucci's motives. Therefore, Lucci
explains that while working as a
mailroom worker in Boro Hall, he
came across evidence that a councilman
named Frank Donnovan is taking kickbacks.
Lucci further explains that he tried
to sell this information back to
Donnovan but blundered and ended
up with a death contract on his
head. Later, while Pete is trying
to solve Vinnie's problems, he accidentally
lets slip some details about Lucci's
problems. However, Pete's responsibility
to maintain the confidentiality
of his position, prevents him from
providing Vinnie with any specifics
(including the name of the man in
trouble). Regardless, Vinnie, who
soon deduces that the problem involves
Lucci, decides to investigate what
little he does know (that someone
in Bore Hall is in trouble). When
Vinnie goes to Frank for help, Frank
instead informs Vinnie that the
undercover operative needs some
help in dealing with his own problems.
Therefore, Vinnie is enrolled in
therapy with other undercover agents.
Fortunately, Vinnie is able to take
advantage of this new situation
to pursue his own agenda. Utilizing
some information from Mike Stowiecki,
a member of the therapy group, Vinnie
soon learns about the Donnovan situation.
Then, at Boro Hall, Vinnie is horrified
when a bomb left for Nick takes
the life of a Boro worker named
Philly Weinstein. An upset Pete
soon confronts the councilman that
he will take whatever steps are
necessary to bring down Donnovan
if Lucci is hurt. In the meantime,
Vinnie finally tracks down Lucci
thanks to a tip from a money-hungry
hustler named Freddie. Fortunately,
Vinnie arrives at Lucci's hideout
Just in time to prevent an assassin
from killing the Boro Hall worker.
The captured assassin then reveals
that a murder contract has been
put out on Pete. Therefore, Vinnie
races back to Brooklyn and, as a
result, the second assassin is stopped
and Pete is saved. All the episode's
loose ends are then tied up when
Vinnie starts to feel like a "good
guy" again and Pete learns that
Donnovan will be tried for his crimes.
