Wednesday Night 1997/1998

New Programs
Dharma & Greg Bryant Gumbel
The Tony Danza Show Built to Last
Working

Dharma & Greg
ABC: Wednesday at 8:30pm (Half Hour Sitcom)

Premise

Greg Montgomery (Thomas Gibson) is a conservative lawyer. On the other hand, Dharma Finkelstein (Jenna Elfman) is a free spirited dog walker/yoga instructor. After meeting on the subway one day, they impulsively marry. Now, they need to face their varying lifestyles as well as two sets of not very understanding in-laws

Flying Blind (92/93's short lived Tea Leoni series) also featured the romance of a conservative man and a free-spirited woman

Familiar Faces

Jenna Elfman (Townies), Alan Rachins (LA Law), Susan Sullivan

Our Take

Although there is a lot of competition from Beverly Hills 90210 and the aging Murphy Brown, Dharma and Greg is a superior program to NBC's Built to Last

Expect to Hear

“Greg's pants...he's not in them right now”

- Dharma Finkelstein (after answering a cellular phone she finds in Greg's discarded pants in their hotel room)

Premise

Another Newsmagazine

Where Have We Seen This Before - Dateline, 60 Minutes, Dateline, 20/20, Dateline, Primetime Live, etc.

Familiar Faces

Bryant Gumbel (The Today Show)

Our Take

CBS has had no luck with this time slot. Furthermore, the competition (Drew Carey and 3rd Rock) is formidable

The Tony Danza Show
NBC: Wednesday at 8pm (Half Hour Sitcom)

Premise

Tony DiMeo (Tony Danza) is a divorced sportswriter trying to raise two daughters on his own. Furthermore, Tony finds himself forced to give up his old writing style and start working on computers despite his fear of technology

83/84's short lived series The Second Half also featured a recently divorced sportswriter with two daughters

Familiar Faces

Tony Danza (Who's the Boss)

Our Take

As seen two years ago, not all Tony Danza shows are hits. Additionally, Tony must contend with three proven hits (Spin City, The Nanny, and Beverly Hills 90210)

Expect to Hear

“It's our apartment and not the home. The home is where we sent Aunt Sadie when she came to Thanksgiving dressed as Batman”

- Tony (after his daughter's teacher comments on "the home environment")

Built to Last
NBC: Wednesday at 8:30pm (Half Hour Sitcom)

Premise

After his father has a heart attack, Royale Watkins gives up a lucrative job offer to help run the family construction business

The multi-generational family plot continues to be a part of Family Matters while the idea of a child giving up a career to help the family has been seen as recently as the short lived series Down Home

Familiar Faces

Paul Winfield

Our Take

Built to Last faces competition from The Nanny, Beverly Hills 90210, and Dharma & Greg (which has a stronger lead-in than Built to Last)

Expect to Hear

“We're contractors. We're supposed to do a little work, charge a great big price and take a long time to do it”

- An Unscrupulous Competitor to Watkins and Son Contracting

Working
NBC: Wednesday at 9:30pm (Half Hour Sitcom)

Premise

For his first job, Matt Peyser (Fred Savage) ends up working for a large, global corporation. The job is not what he expected and he soon finds himself facing incompetent managers and eccentric co-workers

The comic strip Dilbert, Drew Carey without the friends, The Office (1995), 9 to 5 (82/83)

Familiar Faces

Fred Savage (The Wonder Years)

Our Take

If 3rd Rock maintains its Sunday night viewership on Wednesday, Working will benefit from a strong lead-in

Expect to Hear

“She seems like a tremendous asset to the company and a huge loss to the DMV”

- Matt Peyser (after meeting with the Personnel Manager)
