--- Hour Drama --- Wednesday --- 10:00 PM
|
|
Premise
A 52-hour bank robbery is the backdrop to this
story about nine hostages and how their lives
have become intertwined. Each week, the beginning
of the episode will flash back to another 10
minutes of the robbery revealing exactly what
happened and the impact the event continues
to have on their lives
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Tim Daly (Wings),
Chi McBride (Boston Public),
Kim Raver (24/Third Watch),
Scott Wolf (Party of Five),
John Billingsley (Star Trek: Enterprise)
|
Our
Take
The Nine should benefit from following
Lost (which has typically run a few minutes
into the next time-slot, keeping viewers from
easily changing channels) as well as the fact
that it only faces one established time-slot
competitor. Of course, that competing program
is the already-established CSI New York
|
|
Did
You Know?
The Nine is yet another serial drama
in a year filled with them (including Vanished,
Heroes, Smith, Day Break, Kidnapped, etc.)

CBS
--- Hour Drama --- Wednesday --- 8:00 PM
|
|
Premise
Extreme chaos threatens the residents of small-town
Jericho, Kansas, when the cities in the distance
appear to be the victims of nuclear explosions.
Cut off from what may or may not remain of the
outside world and with nowhere to turn, the
citizens must come together and face an unfamiliar
and uncertain future
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Skeet Ulrich (Scream/Miracles),
Gerald McRaney (Major Dad),
Sprague Grayden (John Doe/Joan of Arcadia),
Ashley Scott (Birds of Prey)
|
Our
Take
High-concept shows are always a gamble and for
every success (The X-Files and Lost),
there are probably 10 failures (including Surface,
Invasion and Threshold, just from
last year). On the positive side is the fact
that the pilot is appealing and every once in
a while lightning actually does strike
|
|
Did
You Know?
The impact of a major disaster that begins what
may be the end of the world is also a key plot
point of Three Moons Over Milford, a
series that premiered on ABC Family in early
August
|
|
|
|
|
|
FOX
--- Hour Drama --- Wednesday --- 9:00 PM
|
|
Premise
In this latest offering from Jerry Bruckheimer
(CSI, Without a Trace, etc.), criminal
defense lawyers from the law firm of Turk, Nicholson,
Tuller and Gaines work together to tackle the
most difficult and high-profile cases. This
unique team of attorneys will use a varied set
of skills to find their clients not guilty
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Victor Garber (Alias),
Kerr Smith (Dawson’s Creek)
|
Our
Take
The Justice pilot is very well made and
comes from a production team that has become
accustomed to winning (much like their fictional
law firm). Of course, going against Lost
and knowing your time-slot will be changing
come January has to be considered somewhat of
a challenge
|
|
Did
You Know?
Based on the pilot, it appears Justice
will end each episode by revealing exactly what
took place and whether or not the defendant
actually committed the crime. A similar reveal
was also part of The Jury, another FOX
drama that aired in 2004

NBC
--- Half-Hour Sitcom --- Wednesday --- 8:00
PM
|
|
Premise
This odd pair of friends, John Mason (John
Lithgow) and Jeffrey Pyne (Jeffrey Tambor),
realizing that they may have only 20 good
years left, agree to live each day as if it
were their last. However, their new lifestyle
is complicated by the fact that the two men
are somewhat of an odd couple
|
|
Familiar
Faces
John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun),
Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development),
Heather Burns (Miss Congeniality)
|
Our
Take
While NBC has begun to return to their old
glory days in providing high-quality sitcoms
(such as The Office and Scrubs),
20 Good Years takes a step backwards.
The two leads have strong comedic backgrounds
that appear wasted in the pilot. Of course,
the writing might improve and it does face
an unproven competitor on CBS in Jericho
|
|
Did
You Know?
The Odd Couple plot is nothing new
to television where we have seen everything
from mismatched “cousins” (Perfect Strangers)
to mismatched spouses (Dharma & Greg)
|
|
|
|
|
|
NBC
--- Half-Hour Sitcom --- Wednesday --- 8:30
PM
|
|
Premise
Emulating her real-life role on Saturday
Night Live, Tina Fey stars as the head
writer of a sketch-variety program. Her job
is complicated by two difficult stars (one
has stomach problems and one may be mentally
unstable) and a brash new boss
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live),
Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October),
Tracy Morgan (Saturday Night Live)
|
Our
Take
The promo clip is quite funny; however, 30
Rock may very well live or die based on
how 20 Good Years performs. Additionally,
it is always a bad sign when the networks
do a major reworking of a program right before
it airs (with the instant failure of The
Michael Richards Show in 2000 as an example)
|
|
Did
You Know?
NBC has not released a pilot of this program,
but only a brief promo. Rumor has it that
they are significantly re-tooling the program
|
|

|
|
NBC
--- Hour Drama --- Wednesday --- 10:00 PM
|
|
Premise
In this high-stakes serialized drama, a wealthy
family is in shock when their fifteen-year-old
son is kidnapped. The series will follow the
search for their son while also trying to
uncover the motives behind the crime
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Jeremy Sisto (Clueless),
Dana Delaney (China Beach),
Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People),
Mykelti Williamson (Forrest Gump),
Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty)
|
Our
Take
NBC is going all-out to launch this program
and will most likely be giving it every chance
it can to succeed. We are, however, forced
to once again ask how many serial dramas can
viewers afford to follow each week
|
|
Did
You Know?
As with Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,
NBC is hoping to build interest in this program
by releasing the pilot through Netflix months
before it will premiere on the air

Premise
Detective Brett Hopper is having a really
bad day. He has his apartment ransacked
and is accused of shooting a state attorney.
However, Hopper cannot move beyond this
bad day as he will be forced to continually
re-live it. Each time, he will try to remedy
what is wrong in hopes of clearing his name
and learning the truth behind what is happening
to him
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Taye Diggs (Kevin Hill),
Adam Baldwin (Firefly/Serenity)
|
Our
Take
From the pilot it is very unclear how continually
repeating the exact same day can remain
compelling and not become repetitive. The
time-slot is kind of a plus (holding the
spot between the two mini-seasons of Lost),
but also a disadvantage once American
Idol enters the picture
