1996/1997 Program Trends

Every year, there are certain trends in the new season. Last year, the trend was to attempt to clone the popularity of Friends. This year the following trends seem to be holding true:

“Clone the X-Files”
There are a number of new programs with high concepts involving aliens, government conspiracies, and unexplainable phenomenon
“Bring Back Former Series Stars”
1996/1997 will see the return of a multitude of former series stars including Bill Cosby, Annie Potts, Scott Bakula and the casts of Thirtysomething (Ken Olin and Mel Harris), Cheers (Ted Danson and Rhea Perlman), and Family Ties (Michael J. Fox and Justine Bateman)
“Spin-off a Popular Movie”
1996/1997 will see the television incarnations of Dangerous Minds, Clueless, and Silence of the Lambs (in the form of the series Profiler)
“Remember that one network's garbage is another network's fall schedule”
In addition to the cancelled Jeff Foxworthy Show finding a home on NBC, JAG and The Naked Truth will probably be picked up by CBS as mid-season replacements. And this listing does not even include the cancelled shows being picked up by UPN and WB.
