Premise
Sydney
Bristow may be a college student during the
day, but she spends her spare time as an operative
for SD-6, an organization she has been led to
believe reports to the C.I.A. Her life is complicated
even further when she discovers that her father
is also a spy, as well as the fact that she
may not be working for the right side.

Jump Street joins the C.I.A.
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Jennifer
Garner (Time of Your Life), Ron Rifkin,
Carl Lumbly (M.A.N.T.I.S)
|
Our
Take
The
pilot is very well done and this program is
sandwiched between two established successes
(Disney and The Practice). However,
there is competition from The X-Files
(which lost some ground but is still a success)
and the established Law & Order franchise.
|
|
Expect
to Hear
“Just
because we’re working on the same side...Just
because I know the truth about you now - know
that doesn’t change a thing between us. I accept
what I’m doing now because I have to…Doesn’t
mean I have to accept you.” - Sydney Bristow
(to her father)

The
Education of Max Bickford
|
|
CBS:
Sunday at 8:00pm (Hour Drama)
|
|
Premise
Times
are changing, but Max Bickford is still teaching
the same college courses as he always has.
As a result, Max is passed over for a promotion
and is surprised to see it go to Andrea Haskell,
a former student. It’s now time for him to
re-evaluate his life and decide whether or
not to begin changing himself.
|
|
Dreyfuss
previously played a teacher (albeit a music
teacher) trying to connect with students in
Mr. Holland’s Opus
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Richard
Dreyfuss, Marcia Gay Harden (Space Cowboys)
|
Our
Take
If
Bickford can appeal to the same older
audience as Touched by an Angel did
previously, it will benefit from the 60
Minutes lead-in.
|
|
Expect
to Hear
“When
you know history, you can take your place
in it…When you know history, all the problems
of your life are placed in a larger context.”
- Max Bickford

Law
& Order: Criminal Intent
|
|
NBC:
Sunday at 9:00pm (Hour Drama)
|
|
Premise
From
prolific producer Dick Wolf comes a third
Law & Order series. This time, he will
be following a crime from the beginning and
viewers will now witness the crime as well
as the subsequent investigation.

|
Law
& Order meets Columbo without the
raincoat
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Vincent
D’Onofrio (Men in Black), Jamey Sheridan
(Chicago Hope)
|
Our
Take
The
Law & Order franchise is a force to be
reckoned with. The original is still growing
strong on Wednesday night and Special Victims
Unit has already begun to make its own
mark.
|
|
Expect
to Hear
“I
make my living putting my trust in juries.
Now is not the time to stop.” - Assistant
District Attorney Ron Carver
|

|
NBC:
Sunday at 10:00pm (Hour Drama)
|
|
Premise
UC:
Undercover follows the adventures of the
Special Operations Group, a division of the
Justice Department.
|
|
Highly
reminiscent of the short-lived 1997-1998 NBC
series Players
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Note:
Reports in the news media indicate that the
lead of the series will be taken over by Oded
Fehr (of the recent Mummy movies)
|
Our
Take
UC:
Undercover will very likely face tough
competition from The Practice. Additionally,
Sunday night has never really established
itself as a place for action-adventure programs.
|
|
Expect
to Hear
“Here’s
how this works. I arrest you your wife. I
seize your house, your cars, your business,
and I put your two kids in foster homes…or
we forget all that and you go to work for
me.” - John Keller
|
|
|
|
|
|
WB:
Sunday at 7:00pm (Reality)
|
|
Premise
In
yet another new reality series (this one from
the creators of The Real World), four
teams will run a 48-hour gauntlet of tests,
tasks, and time trials each week that could
take them anywhere in the U.S.A. Via the Internet
and telephone, the home audience will interact
with the players in real time.

|
A
domestic version of The Amazing Race
in weekly installments
|
|
Familiar
Faces
<None>
|
Our
Take
While
Lost in the U.S.A. may quickly become
lost in the ratings, WB is better able to
find success with lower-rated programs than
the traditional networks. Whether or not they
find success here will be driven by how fortunate
they were in selecting the right teams.
|
|
Expect
to Hear
<As
with The Amazing Race, expect to hear
people complaining about each other>
|
|
|
|
|
|
WB: Sunday at 8:30pm (Half Hour Sitcom)
|
|
Premise
This
sitcom revolves around a group of twenty-something
single guys and their dogs. They meet on a regular
basis at the dog park where they mostly discuss
the women they are dating and share stories
and advice.
|
|
The
short-lived 1998 ABC series The Secret Lives
of Men meets Animal Planet
|
|
Familiar
Faces
<None>
|
Our
Take
This
somewhat low-brow sitcom is an odd pairing with
Steve Harvey. Furthermore, Malcolm
in the Middle has pretty much already established
itself as the 8:30pm low-brow sitcom.
|
|
Expect
to Hear
“The point is, the dog park is free...It’s
casual…you got a built-in icebreaker...Your
dog starts sniffing some girl’s dog’s butt....”
- Royce

|
WB: Sunday at 9:30pm (Half-Hour Sitcom)
|
|
Premise
Mike
and Euan are former college roommates living
in an expensive apartment in New York City.
Whereas Mike is responsible, with a steady girlfriend
(Liz) and working for a non-profit organization,
Euan is a womanizer with a high-paying investment
banking job.
|
|
An
early UPN show called Pig Sty also featured
male bachelor roommates
|
|
Familiar
Faces
<None>
|
Our
Take
While
the pilot is somewhat amusing, this program
does not appear to be that great a match with
Nikki.
|
|
Expect
to Hear
“I’m
a liar…I mean, you’re a liar too, but you’re
more honest about it.” - Mike
