Pilot

Pilot
2 hours - Airdate: Jan. 3, 1984
As the pilot begins, Nick and Cody are solving their first case as private investigators. Unfortunately, their client, who had asked the guys to prove that his wife was cheating, physically takes out his frustrations on the novice detectives. However, the guys soon move onto another case when they agree to help a young woman named Kimba Hall. Thereby, the guys learn that Kimba, who was recently rescued at sea by Mama Jo, needs help in proving that she was not responsible for the destruction of The Trade Wind, the ship that she was vacationing on. Cody soon officially gets the guys hired when he promises the King Harbor hotel owner, who chartered The Trade Wind, that Nick will stop trying to sell helicopter tours to the hotel visitors. Now, faced with a real case, Nick and Cody decide to recruit the help of their old army buddy, Murray Bozinsky. Coincidentally, they visit Murray Just in time to rescue him (via helicopter) from a situation that had developed over a misunderstanding between the Boz and a software manufacturer. Back on the Riptide, Roboz soon discovers a listening device. The guys then board the Mimi and trace the device to the home of a mobster named Mike Santana. Unfortunately, Nick's copter develops engine trouble and the guys are captured by Santana. Surprisingly, Santana then frees the guys, but on the condition that they find The Trade Wind and turn it over to him. Later, the search for The Trade Wind begins with Cody and Boz riding in the Riptide and Nick and Kimba flying in the Mimi. However, a helicopter arrives on the scene and starts shooting at the Riptide. Cody and Murray then manage to escape by using a disguised Roboz to convince the copter pilot that they have been hit. The helicopter then attacks Nick and Kimba on a nearby island. Fortunately, they survive by hiding underwater. Later, The Trade Wind is discovered and towed to the island. Having surmised that The Trade Wind keel was used to smuggle gold (from drug payments) for Santana, the guys are then surprised when they discover that the boat's keel is made of lead. The guys soon return to King Harbor and discover that Dex Dexter, a man who has been performing maintenance on The Trade Wind, rented a helicopter that fits the description of the one that attacked them. Therefore, the guys realize that Dexter probably stole Santana's gold keel and sunk The Trade Wind in order to cover his tracks. In order to draw Dexter out into the open, the guys then call him and explain that they have discovered the boat. However, Dexter is one step ahead of them and Cody and the crew of the Contessa are soon captured. Meanwhile, Santana captures Nick and Murray. The whole case then comes to a head when Santana, Dexter, and the guys all arrive on the island. Fortunately, the guys manage to escape captivity and all of the criminals are captured.

After overhearing her husband plan a murder, Tina Brazil proceeds to the Pier 56 Detective Agency and explains her dilemma to Murray. Meanwhile, Ricky Brazil, Tina's husband and an old acquaintance of the guys', kidnaps Nick and Cody and uses threats in hopes of "enticing" them into finding his wife for him. Nick and Cody soon meet up with Tina and Murray. Tina then reveals that she overheard Ricky planning to kill Quinlan. Nick and Cody then proceed to warn the police lieutenant. However, Quinlan, who has been investigating Ricky, refuses to listen to the guys. In fact, Quinlan goes so far as to force Cody into a fistfight. Thereby, when Quinlan is later abducted, the guys (having been in a fight with the lieutenant) are charged with the crime. The guys manage to evade the police and soon meet up with Sergeant Dave Myers, Quinlan's partner. However, Myers is working with Ricky and, as a result, Cody and Tina are captured. Nick and Murray follow in the Mimi and are soon storming Ricky's boat. With the help of some military ordinance that Nick had previously obtained, Ricky is then captured and Quinlan and Tina are rescued. Quinlan, continuing to display his hatred for the guys, then shows his "gratitude" by charging the guys for using illegal firearms during the rescue attempt.

Somebody's Killing the Great Geeks of America
Airdate: Jan. 17, 1984
Boz is hosting a "High Q Club" party on the Riptide when he notices that something is troubling Natalie Kramer, one of his guests. Natalie soon enlists the guys' aid but only reluctantly when she learns that Nick is one of the partners in the agency. (Fifteen years ago while still in high school, Nick had cheated off of one of Natalie's tests.) The guys soon learn that Natalie, one of the three members of a scientific committee at the Betatech Corporation has feared for her life ever since David Powell, a fellow committee member, was killed. After Natalie is almost killed in a hit and run accident, the guys proceed to pay a visit on Danny Sanders, the third member of the committee. However, the guys arrive at Danny's house only to find the scientist murdered. The guys then find an intruder in the house and attempt to follow, but the intruder manages to escape. Later, the guys and Natalie go to Betatech and notice a telescope in Natalie's office. Peering through the telescope they see the man that had fled from Danny's house in a neighboring building. The guys try to stop the man but he once again manages to escape. Unfortunately, he also manages to capture Natalie. The guys then go to the building that the telescope was aimed at and soon deduce that the man is an assassin planning on killing a Senator named Billings during a parade that is about to begin. (The assassin went after the Betatech scientists after realizing that they saw him planning the hit when they were looking through the telescope.) Meanwhile, the assassin sets up his rifle back at Betatech. Fortunately, Natalie is able to send a message over the computer to Murray while Nick uses the Mimi to block the killer's shot. Cody and Boz then proceed to Betatech, rescue Natalie, and capture the killer. [During the course of the episode, Natalie realizes that Nick has matured and she finally forgives him for the high school incident.]

Hatchet Job
Airdate: Jan. 31, 1984
For their latest case, the guys have been hired to catch the man who has been burglarizing the merchants of Pier 56. Unfortunately, the burglar makes a fool of the detectives when he manages to steal their surveillance equipment. The next day, Alison London, who until recently resided in a mental institute, hires the guys to find out who committed the three year-old murder of her boyfriend Jack Wingate. Since Alison was incarcerated for the crime, the guys are hesitant to take the case. However, after an emotional plea from Alison, who does not remember what happened, the guys agree to look into the murder. The guys soon interview Carol Davis, Alison's former best friend, and learn that Jack was having an affair with a woman named Heather Johnson. However, when Nick tries to interview Heather, he is attacked by Vic, Heather's jealous husband. The guys soon return to the Riptide only to be arrested by Quinlan since Alison was not released from the institute but had escaped. After being bailed out by Mama Jo, the guys, believing in Alison's sincerity, decide to continue their investigation. Therefore, since no one knows that Alison was captured by the police, the guys decide to draw out the killer by letting the suspects believe that Alison has recovered her memory. Then, with Nick monitoring from the Riptide and Cody and Boz staking out a hotel room (with Boz posing as Alison), the guys prepare to catch the killer. Soon, Vic arrives at the hotel and tries to kill Murray/Alison but is stopped by Cody. At the same time, Heather tries to kill Nick on the boat. However, the timely arrival of the King Harbor burglar allows Nick to gain the upper hand and to stop Heather (as well as to capture the thief). The guys then deduce that Heather, Jack's killer, intended to kill Nick (for not pursuing her during his recent visit) while Vic was trying to kill Alison in order to protect his wife. Later, Alison is released from the mental institute.

However, before leaving for Mexico, the guys learn from Mama Jo that Dee Dee is a "gold digger." Murray then uses his computer and discovers that, before leaving the country, Lane had sold his restaurant for $400,000. The guys soon arrive in Mexico and find Lane living in a run-down shack. Unfortunately, before they can learn more, Lane is kidnapped. Later, the guys, remembering an exotic drink that Dee Dee liked to order, follow Lane's young wife to the house where Lane is being held. The guys then rescue Lane. Afterwards, Lane explains that a man named Bill Brown had framed Dee Dee for using drugs and, fearing that Dee Dee would go to prison, Lane had given all his money to Brown. Based on the evidence, the guys believe that Dee Dee is part of the "scam, " however, they are forced to prove her guilt to a disbelieving Lane. Thereby, Murray pretends to be rich and ends up on a "date" with Dee Dee. As expected, Dee Dee soon leads Murray into a trap. The guys then storm Brown's house, rescue Murray, recover the money and capture Dee Dee and Brown. Dee Dee, realizing the consequences of her actions, then decides to testify against Brown. Once there, Murray meets Connie Moreci, a woman in distress. Murray then learns that Connie, a stewardess, has been on the run ever since witnessing a man kill a friend of hers named Arthur Truman. (Connie was delivering packages from Arthur Truman to his brother Walter.) Murray and Connie then leave the theater only to be pursued by the killer. They manage to escape but are arrested by the police for reckless driving. After being bailed out by Nick and Cody, Boz and Connie return with the guys to the Riptide. They soon receive a call from a man claiming to have information about the murder. Nick and Cody then proceed to the meeting site. Back on the Riptide, Connie, who is a diabetic, opens up Walter's package as she needs a shot of insulin. (Connie had been told that the packages were insulin for Walter, who is also a diabetic.) Inside, they find diamonds. Meanwhile, no one shows up at the meeting site. Therefore, Nick and Cody return to the Riptide only to discover that Murray and Connie are missing. The guys also discover the diamonds as well as a key inside of a candy bar that was in Walter's package. Fortunately, George Bobbitt, the man who killed Arthur and who has kidnapped Murray and Connie, asks the Boz to use a computer to trace Walter Truman. Thereby, Murray is able to get a message to Nick and Cody. Nick, Cody, and Walter (who had met the guys when they were searching Arthur's house) soon meet up with Bobbitt, Murray, and Connie. The guys then learn that Bobbitt, an ex-CIA agent, has been tracing a killer known as "Lynx." Walter then shocks the guys by revealing himself as "Lynx" and killing Bobbitt. Airdate: Feb. 28, 1984

When a guy named Carter and some of his friends start harassing some of the residents of Pier 56, the guys step in and force them to unmoor their boat (The Endeavor) and leave the pier. Later, Carter takes his revenge by ransacking the Riptide. The outraged detectives then learn that the Endeavor belongs to Dr. Robert Atkins. The guys go to Atkins' house only to find the place surrounded by police. Disguised as pool men, the guys sneak inside and learn that Atkins has been murdered. Quickly leaving the scene when Quinlan arrives, the guys are then surprised to learn that they have a passenger: Sherry Meyers, Atkins' former girlfriend and the police's prime suspect in the murder. Unlike Quinlan, the guys believe Sherry and decide to help her clear her name. (Also, the guys figure that Carter, the Endeavor's recent occupant, is a more likely suspect.) The guys begin their investigation and soon learn that Sid Gorman, Atkins' business manager, had been handling the boat. Meanwhile, Carter meets up with his recently paroled brother Davey. Carter then informs his gang that he intends to take revenge on the Riptide guys before leaving town. The guys then get one step closer to solving the case when they disguise themselves as coast guard investigators and pay a visit on Gorman. Gorman panics and the guys follow the business manager to a vacant apartment. After Gorman notices he is being followed and flees, the guys search the apartment and theorize that Carter Chapman, the apartment 's former occupant, was hired by Gorman to kill Atkins. (Sherry had heard Atkins discussing plans to fire Gorman.) Back at Pier 56, the guys are startled to discover that Carter has stolen the Riptide. Fortunately, since the Roboz is on the Riptide, Murray is able to trace the boat. The guys soon realize something is amiss when Joan turns out to be one of the nicest people they have ever met. (Joan does not even get upset when the guys posing as vacuum cleaner salesman, ruin her carpet.) Regardless, the guys, realizing that they have to follow through with the case, then proceed to follow Joan. However, they soon notice that they are being trailed. The guys then confront Jane and Tracy, their pursuers, and learn that the two women are private detectives that a concerned Joan had been forced to hire. Finally, the guys realize they have had enough and proceed to Roger Ramsdale to quit. Unfortunately, when they get tb Ramadale's house, they find that their client has been murdered. Although the guys do see a man fleeing the scene, they are unable to catch him. Later, the guys decide to team up with Jane and Tracy when Quinlan decides to arrest Joan for the crime. Following their lead, the guys are soon led to a photography studio where they find pictures that Walters had taken of a pregnant woman named Ellie Thompkins. A visit from Melba Bozinsky P.H.D., Murray's historian sister, prompts the guys to try to prove her theory that Hitler had established a port on the United State's west coast during World War II. (Melba needs to obtain proof as an article outlining her initial findings was rejected by publisher Ted Cardwell and editor John McMasters.) With the help of Heinrich Von Schlauser, a friend of Melba's, the guys begin their investigation by trying to locate a German U2 boat that supposedly sunk somewhere in the area. However, while searching, the Riptide is attacked by a man in a helicopter. Fortunately, they manage to escape on the Ebbtide. The guys soon discover that the helicopter was rented by a man named John McMasters. Later, after defusing a bomb that was left on the Riptide, Melba realizes that McMasters works for the company that rejected her manuscript. With Cody on the Ebbtide and Nick in the Mimi, a trap is set for McMasters. Thereby, McMasters and Cardwell are captured. However, although they admit they were responsible for the helicopter attack on the Riptide (as they wanted to find a supply of gold that is supposedly stored on the U2 boat), they deny any knowledge of the bomb. Nick and Cody then realize that Heinrich must have been behind the bombing. Meanwhile, Heinrich, a Nazi that had been part of Hitler's plans, kidnaps Murray and Melba in order to prevent anyone from recovering evidence of his past actions. Fortunately, Nick and Cody soon arrive and capture Heinrich. With all the loose ends tied up, the guys are then able to help Melba recover the U2 boat. Tracing the identification numbers on a water tank that had been thrown at Nick by the kidnappers, the guys are soon led to drug dealers Dennis and Alejandro. The guys are captured and discover that Dennis and Alejandro have been working with a man named Villanova. They also learn that Hanson had trained the dolphins to make drug shipments.
