What
We Predicted
|
What
Happened
|
What's
Next
|
-
We predicted that Will & Grace would
have a better chance of survival than Benben
- On
the other hand, we noted that L.A. Docs
and Conrad Bloom (with its many insider
jokes) only had a fair chance of survival
- Based
on an earlier pilot of King of Queens
(with a different actor in one of the key roles),
we did not feel that this show would survive
|
- King
of Queens, benefiting from the addition
of Jerry Stiller (formerly of Seinfeld),
has proven to be a key component of CBS’ Monday
night schedule
- Will
& Grace was the most successful new
introduction of the night. In fact, Will
& Grace beat King of Queens in
all of the key adult demos (except for adults
50+ where King of Queens was king)
|
-
All of the networks are maintaining the same
basic strategies in 1999/2000
- FOX
has replaced Melrose Place with a less
“soapy” drama
- NBC
continues to air Thursday night “reject” sitcoms,
however, they have replaced the 9-10pm sitcom
block with a drama

What
We Predicted
|
What
Happened
|
What's
Next
|
-
We predicted a slim chance of survival for both
Costello and Brimstone
-
Conversely, we noted that The Hughley’s
had a good time slot as well as predicted that
Sports Night would benefit from an excellent
time slot, production team, and a likeable cast
-
As far as Encore! Encore! was concerned,
we pointed out that the program’s future was
uncertain given the reported retooling of a
rather questionable pilot
|
-
As predicted, Costello and Brimstone
did not make it through the season
-
ABC found success both in The Hughley’s
and Sports Night
-
The retooled Encore! Encore! proved as
problematic as the initial pilot and the show
was quickly cancelled
|
-
ABC and NBC are maintaining their 8-10pm sitcom
strategies --
On ABC, Spin City is replacing the
departed Home Improvement and Dharma
& Greg is now leading off the second
hour while at NBC, Just Shoot Me has
moved in to replace Mad About You and
Will & Grace has graduated to the
9pm lead-off slot
-
CBS has given up on airing movies on Tuesday
night and is instead trying a newsmagazine/
drama combo for 9-11pm
- UPN
has eliminated their 9-10pm sitcom block in
favor of a light action-adventure series while
WB continues to lead off the night with Buffy
(now followed by spin-off series Angel)

What
We Predicted
|
What
Happened
|
What's
Next
|
-
We predicted that The Secret Lives of Men
would only have a fair chance of survival
-
As
far as To Have and To Hold was concerned,
we predicted that it would have a slim chance
of survival. Additionally, we noted
that it would be unlikely that Maggie Winters
would make it through the season
|
-
The Secret Lives of Men remained a secret;
not making it through the season
-
As predicted, both Maggie Winters and
To Have and to Hold were cancelled
|
-
ABC, FOX, UPN, and WB have maintained their
same basic strategies.
However, ABC has moved Two Guys and a Girl
(now without a “Pizza Place”) into the lead-off
slot while FOX has replaced Party of Five
with Get Real, another drama and WB
has replaced Charmed with Roswell,
another high concept, teen friendly series
-
CBS has eliminated their 9-11pm newsmagazine/drama
combo in favor of a movie while moving the established
Cosby to 8pm to replace the previously
established Nanny
-
NBC has replaced their 9-10pm sitcom block (due
to the departure of Newsradio and 3rd
Rock on Tuesday) with a drama

What
We Predicted
|
What
Happened
|
What's
Next
|
-
We predicted that Jesse would have
a good chance of survival
-
Conversely,
we predicted that Vengeance Unlimited
would not make it through the season
|
-
As expected, Jesse, benefiting from
a cushy Thursday night slot, was the most
successful new program of the season
-
Per our prediction,Vengeance Unlimited
did not make it through the season and Hollyweird
remained in development limbo and never even
aired
|
-
NBC has maintained their successful Thursday
night strategy with Stark Raving Mad
taking the coveted 9:30pm slot while CBS is
continuing to air dramas with Chicago Hope
replacing the void created by canceling Promised
Land
-
ABC and FOX have decided to counter-program
against NBC with sitcoms and the 18-34 oriented
Wasteland on ABC and sitcoms and the
teen oriented Manchester Prep on FOX
-
On networks five and six, UPN has replaced
their sitcoms with wrestling while WB continues
to air teen oriented dramas

What
We Predicted
|
What
Happened
|
What's
Next
|
-
Given the historical success of the Olsen
twins, we predicted that Two of a Kind
would have a good chance of surviving on ABC’s
TGIF. On the other hand, we predicted
that Brother’s Keeper would only have
a fair chance of survival
-
Over
on the other networks, we predicted that
Buddy Faro, Living in Captivity,
and Trinity would not make it through
the season
|
-
As predicted, Buddy Faro, Living
in Captivity, and Trinity were
quickly cancelled
-
The midseason show Providence proved
quite successful for NBC. As a result,
ABC faced strong competition at 8pm and Two
of a Kind did not live up to their expectations.
Brother’s Keeper also proved to be
a disappointment for ABC
|
-
As expected, ABC is maintaining their TGIF
strategy. Based on the two new TGIF
entries, it appears that ABC may be going
for more of a family target than a teen target
-
CBS is maintaining a similar strategy with
another untested drama (Now & Again)
at 9pm replacing last years untested drama
(Buddy Faro)
-
FOX is once again back to all dramas on Friday
night. They have replaced the high concept
Millennium with another high concept
Chris Carter series
-
NBC is sticking with their midseason strategy
with newcomer Cold Feet replacing the
critically acclaimed Homicide
-
UPN has switched from dramas to a movie night
while WB is entering Friday with an all sitcom
slate

What
We Predicted
|
What
Happened
|
What's
Next
|
-
Based on the production team, we predicted
that Fantasy Island would have a good
chance of survival. Conversely, based
on an early version of a pilot with a slightly
different cast, we did not feel that Martial
Law had much of a chance of survival;
especially considering how difficult it was
to understand the lead character in the preview
-
Based on its time slot and competition, we
predicted it unlikely that Cupid would
be renewed. Additionally, we felt that
Wind on Water had a very slim chance
of survival
|
-
As predicted, Cupid and Wind on
Water were cancelled
-
Based on an aired version of the pilot where
you could more easily understand Sammo Hung
as well as the addition of Arsenio Hall to
the cast, Martial Law proved quite
successful for CBS. As a result, Fantasy
Island lost the 9pm ratings race
|
-
With the failure of their Saturday night drama
slate, ABC is adding a movie night to Saturday
-
CBS and FOX are maintaining their 1998/1999
strategies
- NBC
has the same basic Saturday night drama strategy.
Please note, however, that Profiler
is being recast (with Jamie Luner replacing
Ally Walker) and that they are trying to answer
their 8pm challenge with another drama

-
We predicted that That 70s Show would

As predicted, That 70s Show was successful.
On the other hand, Holding the Baby
was not
|
-
CBS and FOX have maintained their same basic
1998/1999 strategies
-
ABC has a similar strategy as last year with
one minor change: the new David E. Kelley
drama Snoops has been added at 9pm
where 20/20 aired last year
-
NBC has added a new drama to Sunday night
and moved Dateline to 7pm (where it
will directly take on 60 Minutes) while
WB has replaced their 8-10pm sitcom block
with dramas
