Night-by-Night
Overview
|
Monday
|
|
What's
Next
|
- Although
CBS is maintaining their basic schedule of sitcoms
followed by a 10pm drama, they have moved two
long time Monday night programs (Murphy Brown
& Chicago Hope) and replaced them
with new programming
-
NBC, making a bold move by eliminating their
long running Monday movie night, has managed
to put together an entire night of programming
(targeted to women) filled with sitcoms that
originally ran between Seinfeld and ER.

|
|
What's
Next
|
- ABC
and NBC are basically maintaining their same
Tuesday night strategies of airing sitcoms from
8pm to 10pm and capitalizing on the strengths
of proven programming at 9pm (Home Improvement
and Frasier) and 10pm (NYPD Blue
and one of the original nights of Dateline)
-
CBS, on the other hand is counter programming
by stacking the night with untried dramas (as
well as JAG which has been transplanted
from Friday night)
-
FOX is keeping Tuesday as their movie night

What's
Next
|
-
FOX is maintaining their same programming from
1996/1997 and, although some of the programs
have changed, ABC is continuing their strategy
of airing sitcoms from 8pm-10pm followed by
Primetime Live
-
Although NBC is maintaining an 8pm-10pm sitcom
strategy, with the exception of 3rd Rock
(which is on a new night), their Wednesday schedule
is filled with new, untried, programming
-
CBS, having had no success in programming the
9pm to 11pm slots in 1996/1997 is attempting
to capitalize on their hiring of Bryant Gumbel
with a new newsmagazine as well as from the
rescheduling of Chicago Hope from Monday
to Wednesday

Thursday
|
|
What's
Next
|
- NBC
is maintaining their basic Thursday night Must
See TV strategy. As has been the case in
the past, NBC is utilizing the strengths of
their 8pm, 9pm, and 10pm programs to introduce
new shows at 8:30pm and 9:30pm
-
In 1997/1998, CBS is continuing their strategy
of airing older programming in contrast to the
younger skewing NBC schedule
-
Despite their lack of success with Thursday
night dramas in 1996/1997, ABC is introducing
two new Thursday night dramas in 1997/1998.
Following NBC's Dateline strategy, ABC
has added another night of 20/20
-
FOX, who was troubled last year by the real
life antics of previous Thursday night Martin
series star Martin Lawrence, has introduced
an entirely new slate of programming

Friday
|
|
What's
Next
|
- ABC
is maintaining their TGIF Friday night
sitcom strategy. Their new programming, however,
has more of an "out of this world" basis.
This trend is most likely due to the success
of Sabrina
-
In an interesting move, CBS has cloned the ABC
TGIF strategy. Helping CBS with this
strategy is the acquisition of two former ABC
TGIF shows: Family Matters and
Step by Step
-
FOX, now treating Millennium like the
sci-fi staple that The X-Files had been
on Friday night, continues to try and find a
sci-fi themed companion program at 8pm
-
NBC has maintained their 96/97 Friday night
schedule with one change: the new drama Players
replaces the reality based Unsolved Mysteries

Saturday
|
|
What's
Next
|
- ABC,
abandoning their 1996/1997 plan of airing sitcoms
on Saturday night, has moved to a risky (given
CBS's "ownership" of the night) all drama
schedule
-
On the other hand, FOX is returning to an all
reality schedule
-
Despite the moderate performance in 1996/1997
as well as CBS's superior genre performance
with Early Edition, NBC is once again
filling Saturday night with their "Thrilogy"
of dramas

Sunday
|
|
What's
Next
|
- Sunday
remains movie night for ABC, CBS, and FOX in
1997/1998. Additionally, ABC is capitalizing
on their Disney ownership by adding a weekly
Disney movie
-
In 1997/1998, both FOX and CBS are maintaining
their 1996/1997 strategies
-
The biggest surprise of the night is NBC's moving
3rd Rock from its high rated Sunday night
slot
