Night-by-Night Overview

Monday
Last Season
The 2006/2007 Season
  • ABC: What About Brian? has returned despite other shows having better ratings. This is quite possibly due to the fact that it comes from J.J. (Lost) Abrams
  • CBS: As predicted, How I Met/Mother survived as the stronger of the two 05/06 sitcoms
  • FOX: Kitchen Confidential departed as expected, while Prison Break lived up to the anticipated level of quality seen in the pilot
  • NBC: Per our expectations, Surface was too risky a venture for NBC to take on Monday night
  • With the loss of football, ABC has moved to a night of reality topped off by the return of What About Brian?
  • Sticking with what has worked for them in the past, CBS continues with a night of comedies leading into the first of their three C.S.I. franchises
  • Embracing the success of their high-action serial dramas, FOX adds even another to the mix with the launch of Vanished
  • NBC sticks with dramas from 9-11pm led off by Mid-Season success Deal or No Deal
  • While My Network launches with what will be a consistent schedule of soaps throughout the week (and year), CW launches with a Monday night that clearly takes after its WB side in offering two family-oriented dramas

Tuesday
Last Season
The 2006/2007 Season
  • ABC: While the quality of Commander was top-notch and the program launched strong, numerous changes in the behind-the-scenes staff and an overly long hiatus doomed the program
  • CBS: We liked Close to Home, but not the time-slot. CBS kept the show, but moved it to Friday
  • FOX: Bones successfully launched in Fall only growing stronger along with the rest of the network with the return of American Idol in January
  • NBC/UPN: My Name is Earl lived up to its enjoyable pilot while, as expected, Sex, Love & Secrets failed
  • WB: Although we noted the quality of Supernatural, we questioned the time-slot. The show did survive, but WB needed to move it to another night
  • ABC is once again trying sitcoms on Tuesday (albeit at 9pm) with the night now starting with reality
  • CBS is returning with their Mid-Season strategy of all dramas
  • Until American Idol returns in January, FOX is back with another night of dramas
  • NBC is also switching to a night of dramas including two of their three Law & Order series
  • CW is keeping with the WB side of the family at 8pm with Gilmore and following the UPN side at 9pm with Veronica

Wednesday
Last Season
The 2006/2007 Season
  • ABC: As predicted, neither of the new 2005/2006 ABC premieres has returned
  • CBS: Our note last year that Criminal Minds could easily join the crop of other CBS crime dramas came true
  • FOX: Per our expectations, Head Cases was not able to compete against the myriad 9pm dramas
  • NBC: Martha quickly dropped in the ratings as The Donald began to distance himself from his own spin-off. Following through on our prediction, E-Ring also failed to return
  • WB: Related, recast after the pilot screened last year, did not manage to find a spot on CW’s merged schedule
  • ABC is maintaining dramas from 9p-11pm (with Day Break airing between two mini-seasons of Lost), but switching from comedies to reality at 8pm
  • CBS also returns again with dramas beginning at 9pm. Following ABC, they are also switching out of comedies at 8pm. In CBS’s case, 8pm will see another drama in 2006/2007
  • Not to be left out of the crowd, FOX is also abandoning sitcoms on Wednesday as, with CBS, they are moving to a night of dramas
  • Moving in the opposite direction, NBC is actually adding sitcoms to their Wednesday night followed by an hour of reality before joining the other networks at 10pm with a drama
  • CW is picking up an hour of reality from UPN at 8pm and an hour of drama from WB at 9pm

Thursday
Last Season
The 2006/2007 Season
  • ABC: Per our expectations, The Night Stalker has not returned
  • FOX: As predicted, Reunion did not survive against the tough competition in the time-slot
  • UPN: Everybody Hates Chris did live up to the “buzz” we saw coming its way. At the same time, Love, Inc. fulfilled our expectations in not being able to capitalize on the Chris “buzz” in its later time-slot
  • CBS is joining NBC in airing comedies at 8pm, while CBS competes with the return of Survivor and CW picks up Smallville from WB. ABC originally scheduled comedies for 8pm, but has since moved to a light-hearted drama thanks to positive critical acclaim for Ugly Betty
  • 9pm sees the same schedule for CBS, FOX and CW (lifted from WB’s Mid-Season schedule). They will now face off against a re-located Grey’s Anatomy as well as NBC’s spring success Deal or No Deal
  • CBS and NBC return with dramas at 10pm, now joined by ABC which has abandoned 20/20 in favor of airing a competing drama

Friday
Last Season
The 2006/2007 Season
  • ABC: As predicted, Hot Properties was the latest victim of the dying TGIF
  • CBS: We were on target in theorizing that Threshold would not make it. On the other hand, Ghost Whisperer performed better than expected (and worked well with the relocated Close to Home)
  • FOX/NBC: Per our expectations, Killer Instinct did not return and neither did the NBC shows, which were always questionable with one having an unscreened pilot and the other losing a key actor
  • WB: Twins just joined the multitude of other failed Friday night WB sitcoms
  • TGIF is gone and ABC has moved away from sitcoms to a light drama at 9pm. They originally intended to air Ugly Betty, another light drama, at 8pm, but are instead going with America’s Funniest Home Videos (as they feel Ugly Betty is strong enough for Thursday night). ABC return with news at 10pm
  • CBS is back with their 2006 Mid-Season schedule, while FOX has moved to a night of all reality
  • NBC has given up on reality and news on Friday night in favor of a night filled with dramas
  • Friday night is a “UPN Night” for CW with the new network picking up UPN Friday night programming

Last Season
The 2006/2007 Season
  • As no new shows premiered in 2005/2006, there was nothing to fail (or to succeed)
  • Saturday night would have been another night of movies, dramas repeats and newsmagazines if not for the launch of ABC Saturday Night College Football
  • My Network TV will be airing clip shows of their weekly series to catch viewers up on what happened during the previous week

Sunday
Last Season
The 2006/2007 Season
  • FOX: As predicted, the tone of The War at Home fit in with FOX’s Sunday night. However, FOX is following through in what we noted last year and moving the show so that it is not sandwiched between two animated series
  • ABC returns with their same basic schedule as 2005/2006 with the exception of 10pm where a new drama replaces the relocated Grey’s Anatomy
  • With CBS abandoning the sole remaining network movie night, they have relocated Amazing Race and Without a Trace to join the returning 60 Minutes and Cold Case
  • FOX is back with a night of primarily-animated sitcoms, while NBC moves to football
  • Sunday night is all UPN for the CW with the night filled by relocated sitcoms and their weekly Top Model repeat
