Night-by-Night Overview

Monday
Last Season
The New Season
  • CBS continued with their winning Monday night strategy  as well as found a show for the 10pm slot with Family Law (which premiered on Monday night while the much hyped Once and Again premiered on Tuesdays on ABC)
  • FOX and WB continued to hold their own with existing series (Ally McBeal and 7th Heaven), but had no luck with their freshman entries
  • NBC’s attempt at filling Monday night up with past Thursday Night rejects once again proved unsuccessful
  • ABC, CBS, UPN, and WB are basically maintaining their same Monday night strategies

  •
  • FOX is maintaining their strategy of counter-programming Monday night with dramas.  This fall, they will be pairing the David E.Kelley produced Ally McBeal with a new entry from Kelley

  •
  • Once again, NBC is attempting to compete in the sitcom category from 8-9pm with existing shows relocated from more high profile time slots.  With Monday night’s Dateline gone, they are programming back-to-back dramas from 9pm-11pm

Tuesday
Last Season
The New Season
  • ABC’s introduction of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire allowed them to dominate the 8-9pm time slot

  •
  • CBS continued to hold their own with the older skewing audience while WB maintained their success with younger viewers

  •
  • While both ABC and NBC had successes with their 9pm sitcoms, the same could not be said regarding their 9:30pm sitcoms
  • Both CBS and WB are returning with the same schedules they aired throughout 1999/2000 season

  •
  • ABC has maintained their 2000 mid-season strategy of Millionaire and sitcoms followed by a drama (with NYPD Blue and Once and Again splitting the season)

  •
  • Although the shows have changed, NBC is still sticking with a night of sitcoms and Dateline while FOX is returning with sitcoms followed by an action/adventure drama

  •
  • Having seen no success with their sitcom/drama strategy in 1999/2000, UPN will now be airing movies on Tuesday night

Wednesday
Last Season
The New Season
  • Both ABC and NBC did quite well thanks in part to the successful introduction of The West Wing on NBC and the continued strength of Drew Carey on ABC

  • FOX experienced their final year with 90210 as well as the poor performance of Get Real. CBS also had no luck with their 8-9pm sitcoms

  • UPN continued to see a small, but loyal, audience for Voyager and 7 Days while WB held their own with the teen/young adult market
  • CBS is continuing their strategy of sitcoms followed by a movie while UPN returns with their same 1999/2000 schedule/strategy

  •
  • Newsmagazines are out and dramas are in with ABC replacing 20/20 and NBC replacing Dateline.  Additionally, ABC’s schedule will feature a fourth night of Millionaire

  •
  • WB is returning with a night of dramas featuring Dawson’s Creek and Felicity/Jack and Jill (who will be splitting the season similar to what ABC is doing Tuesdays at 10pm)

  •
  • With nothing remaining from their 1999/2000 schedule, FOX is launching a new drama preceded by two sitcoms (one of which is not premiering until mid-season)

Thursday
Last Season
The New Season
  • As expected, NBC continued to be the big winner on Thursday night while CBS continued to hold their own with older audiences with Diagnosis: Murder.  Conversely, ABC had no real success with their new 1999/2000 shows

  •
  • With Manchester Prep never premiering on FOX, WB’s Popular had no teen-specific competition

  •
  • WWF Smackdown provided a loyal core of young male viewers to UPN
  • NBC returns with their “Must See TV” scheduling strategy while ABC is continuing with the strategy that they premiered in mid-season (Whose Line followed by Millionaire)

  •
  • CBS is maintaining their same basic scheduling strategy (although 48 Hours is switching places with Diagnosis: Murder) and UPN is continuing with a night of Smackdown

  •
  • WB has returned with the younger skewing Charmed at 9pm.  In 2000/2001, Charmed will be partnered with Gilmore Girls, the beginning of a WB objective of airing more family-friendly fair (similar to 7th Heaven)

Friday
Last Season
The New Season
  • Although Cold Feet under-performed (as expected), NBC continued to do well with Providence and Dateline.  Moving Law and Order: SVU to 10pm further strengthened their performance

  •
  • FOX had no success with their dramas while WB placed last with their sitcoms

  •
  • ABC continued to see a downward trend in the performance of “TGIF” while CBS had difficulties in the early part of the night
  • With Sabrina moving to anchor a teen/young adult schedule on WB, ABC is moving away from their own teen-oriented strategies of the past and scheduling more adult-oriented sitcoms

  •
  • Despite the poor performance of genre programs on Friday night in the past (with The X-Files as a rare exception), both UPN and FOX have scheduled Sci-Fi shows from 8pm - 10pm

  •
  • NBC continues with the same schedule that worked for them in mid-season of 2000 while CBS is premiering two new action-adventure shows to accompany their already successful Nash Bridges

Saturday
Last Season
The New Season
  • While CBS continued their lead on Saturday night, only Walker lived up to their expectations. Meanwhile, Fox continued to be satisfied with the performance of their long running schedule

  •
  • As expected, the poorly scheduled Freaks and Geeks under-performed for NBC and was quickly removed from the schedule.  Their attempt to move Profiler to 9pm with Others moving in at 10pm also failed to live up to their expectations
  • After their unsuccessful attempt with the Saturday Night “Thrillogy”, NBC is joining ABC in scheduling movies on Saturday nights.  The ABC strategy will change however in 1Q 2001 when the XFL, a new football league designed by WWF’s Vince McMahon, premieres

  •
  • FOX is once again returning with the same Saturday night schedule while CBS is maintaining a night of dramas

Sunday
Last Season
The New Season
  • Although Snoops (even after being “retooled”) was a low point for ABC, they bounced back successfully thanks to the mid-season introduction of Millionaire

  •
  • CBS continued to do well with their long standing Sunday night strategy while FOX greatly benefited from the mid-season debut of Malcolm

  •
  • While NBC fell into third place behind ABC and CBS, WB fared even worse as a result of the under-performance of Felicity (“blamed” on the length of the star’s hair) and Jack and Jill
  • CBS is returning with their long standing Sunday night schedule while both ABC and FOX are returning with the schedules that worked for them in mid-season 2000

  •
  • WB has moved their night of sitcoms from Friday to Sunday while NBC is hoping Ed will fill the void between Dateline and their Sunday movie
