--- Half-Hour Sitcom --- Monday --- 8:30 PM
|
|
Premise
From Executive Producer James Burrows (Taxi,
Cheers, Frasier, Friends): Former elementary
school classmates are brought back together
at a surprise reunion 20 years later. The series
will follow the ongoing interaction between
the now-grown classmates
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Lizzy Caplan (Related), Andrea Anders
(Joey), Jason Ritter (Joan of Arcadia)
|
Our
Take
CBS has already established itself with a successful
night of comedies (and the only one left on
the air). That being said, The Class is
not quite as strong as some of their past efforts
|
|
Did
You Know?
Like his father John Ritter, many of Jason Ritter’s
early roles were in dramas
Unlike Friends, The Class expects
to rarely have the entire cast together in the
same location

FOX
--- Hour Drama --- Monday --- 9:00 PM
|
|
Premise
This drama unravels the mysterious disappearance
of Sara Collins, the beautiful wife of a Georgia
Senator. While searching, the FBI must deal
with questionable motives and unexpected secrets.
Thereby, in order to find her, they first have
to figure out who she really is
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Rebecca Gayhart (Dead Like Me/Beverly Hills
90210), Ming-Na (ER), Esai Morales
(NYPD Blue), Penelope Ann Miller (Kindergarten
Cop)
|
Our
Take
While this quality program will fit in nicely
with what will become FOX’s night of action-oriented
serial dramas (joining 24 and Prison
Break), the question is how many serial
dramas can the viewing public actually be expected
to follow
|
|
Did
You Know?
Joanne Kelly (who plays Sara Collins) also played
a character that was more than she seemed in
Showtime’s Jeremiah
Vanished is joined in 2006/2007 by NBC’s
Kidnapping – another new serial drama
featuring the hunt for a missing person
|
|
|
|
|
|
NBC
--- Hour Drama --- Monday --- 9:00 PM
|
|
Premise
In this drama, a group of people acquire incredible
powers from teleporting and flying to reading
other people’s minds. These special individuals
must learn how to deal with these abilities
before they can use them to possibly save humankind
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Gregg Grunberg (Alias), Ali Larter (Varsity
Blues),
Milo Ventimiglia (Gilmore Girls)
|
Our
Take
While the show has been receiving some buzz
(in a year with relatively little buzz), it
is unclear why NBC believes it will do better
than Surface – another sci-fi show that
featured an ongoing storyline and a myriad of
seemingly unrelated characters
|
|
Did
You Know?
In hopes of building up hype for Heroes,
NBC will be offering the program as a download
on iTunes before it premieres on the network
|
|
|
Studio
60 on the Sunset Strip
|
|
NBC
--- Hour Drama --- Monday --- 10:00 PM
|
|
Premise
After the producer of late-night variety show
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip interrupts
the program with an on-air tirade against
the network, the senior executives are left
with a political nightmare. Hoping to salvage
the situation, newly installed network president
Jordan McDeere decides to recruit two ex-show
writers to take over the reins
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Matthew Perry (Friends),
Bradley Whitford (The West Wing),
Amanda Peet (The Whole Nine Yards),
Steven Weber (Wings),
Timothy Busfield (Thirtysomething)
|
Our
Take
Aaron Sorkin knows quality (i.e., West
Wing before he left the show) and Studio
60 is among the more buzzworthy shows
this year. However, having to live up to the
buzz may actually be detrimental to this program.
There is also the fact that CSI Miami
is clearly established in this time-slot
|
|
Did
You Know?
Producer/Writer/Creator Aaron Sorkin previously
offered a look at TV behind the scenes with
the short-lived (albeit critically acclaimed)
sitcom Sports Night
In hopes of building interest/hype, NBC is
releasing the Studio 60 pilot through
Netflix before it premieres on NBC

|
|
CW
--- Hour Drama --- Monday --- 9:00 PM
|
|
Premise
After Paul Rader is convicted of a crime he
did not commit, he and his entire family go
on the lam until he can prove his innocence.
Now the family finds themselves living under
different aliases hoping that they can stay
one step ahead of the law as well as the criminals
behind the frame
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Donnie Wahlberg (Boomtown/The Sixth Sense),
Leslie Hope (24)
|
Our
Take
WB always had a problem finding 9pm shows
to follow 7th Heaven. Changing the
network’s name to CW (as Monday is basically
a WB schedule) will not necessarily resolve
the problem. Additionally, Runaway
is not as compatible as Everwood was
at 9pm. On the other hand, station changes
and new viewing opportunities could positively
impact how CW performs
|
|
Did
You Know?
At one time the finale of The Fugitive,
the classic 60s program about a man on the
run after being convicted of a crime he did
not commit, was the highest rated regular
program in the history of Television

MYNT
--- Hour Drama --- Monday to Saturday ---
8:00 PM
|
|
Premise
Two brothers from New Jersey, Alex and Louis,
are forced to flee to LA because of a disaster
with the Mafia and the restaurant they owned.
Both brothers fall in love with Andrea and,
when the Mafia abducts Louis, Alex has her
all to himself. Louis escapes captivity
with stolen Mafia money and proceeds to
seek revenge on those who have wronged him
– including his own brother
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Sofia Milos (CSI Miami)
|
Our
Take
MYNT has clearly spent money on this program
and hired an attractive cast. However, the
real question is if the American viewing
audience will be willing to commit five
hours a week in order to follow the series.
While it is true these types of telenovelas
work in other countries, those countries
do not have the myriad viewing choices that
are found in the U.S.
|
|
Did
You Know?
MYNT is going all out in promoting the show
including a website that offers dozens of
mini-prequel clips with the characters talking
about other characters and events in their
“lives”

|

young designer named Michelle takes a job
at the Fashion House. Michelle falls in love
with the owner’s son and tries to avoid manipulations

try to climb her way to the top of the fashion
world and maintain her status as a powerful
fashion icon
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Bo Derek, Morgan Fairchild
|
Our
Take
While telenovelas have proven successful for
Telemundo and Univision in the US, there are
significantly less Spanish-language options
than there are English-language options (as
MYNT will need to compete with). However,
it should be noted that MYNT is going out
of their way to offer higher production values
than normally seen with other telenovelas
|
|
Did
You Know?
The original pilot did not include Bo Derek
or Morgan Fairchild. Their addition is part
of a concentrated effort by MYNT to maximize
the interest in their new offerings

Our
Take
Art of Betrayal joins Watch Over
Me in premiering on MYNT in 1Q 2007.
As with Betrayal, a great deal of
the success of this program will depend
on how well MYNT does in establishing the
telenovela franchise in 4Q
|
|
Did
You Know?
MYNT has created two overall long-term names
for their various telenovelas: Secret
Obsessions and Desire. Art
of Betrayal and Table for Three
fall under the Desire title while
Watch Over Me and Fashion House
fall under Secret Obsessions

MYNT

|
|
Premise
Psychology student Julia Martin was all
set to marry wealthy businessman Sebastian.
However, Sebastian’s dangerous lifestyle
and illegal activities forces him to hire
her a bodyguard named Jack. Now Julia
finds herself falling for Jack while also
discovering the danger she faces from
her own fiancé
|
|
Familiar
Faces
Miss Universe Dayanara Torres
|
Our
Take
In order to maintain interest in a world
where repeat episodes of serial programs
do not perform well, MYNT will be airing
each of their series in 13-week cycles
with new programs periodically replacing
the old. Watch Over Me will be
one of the first “replacement” series.
Its success will depend greatly on how
the first 13-week cycle performs
|
|
Did
You Know?
Before the demise of UPN and WB paved
the way for the creation of MYNT (due
to the availability of stations left without
an affiliation from the merger), these
English-language telenovelas were being
developed as syndicated offerings
