Yes, Dear
CBS: Monday at 8:30pm (Half Hour Sitcom)

Premise

Two sisters in Los Angeles raise their own families in very different ways.  One is neurotic and married to a very responsible husband.  On the other hand, both the other sister and her husband have a much more relaxed approach to raising a family

The Odd Couple with kids

Familiar Faces

Anthony Clark (Boston Common), Mike O’ Malley (The Mike O’ Malley Show), Liza Snyder (Jesse), Jean Louisa Kelly (Cold Feet)

Our Take

Although obviously not as strong as either Everybody Loves Raymond or The King of Queens, Yes, Dear has the right tone to fit in between the two CBS veterans.  Bottom Line: A likeable comedy with a good time slot

Expect to Hear

Kim Warner (referring to Christine’s son): “Christine, look at him.  He could just sit in front of the TV all day and never say a word”

Christine Hughes: “I know, isn’t it great?”

Boston Public
FOX: Monday at 8:00pm (Hour Drama)

Premise

He’s dramatically told the stories of lawyers (Ally McBeal, The Practice), doctors (Chicago Hope), private detectives (the short-lived Snoops) and the residents of a small town (Picket Fences).  Now, producer David E. Kelley is taking on school teachers

The Bronx Zoo (an 80’s NBC school drama) moves to Boston

Familiar Faces

Fyvush Finkel (Picket Fences), Chi McBride (The John Larroquette Show/The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer)

Our Take

It’s hard to judge a show based on limited information.  While Kelley has a fairly good track record, his shows do not necessarily fit at 8pm (as in the case of the short-lived Snoops)

Deadline
NBC: Monday at 9:00pm (Hour Drama)

Premise

Investigative journalist and graduate journalism professor Wallace Benton writes a column for a New York newspaper entitled “Nothing but the Truth.”  He exposes corruption ranging from murder to re-examining courtroom evidence

Lou Grant meets the short-lived 1997 series Cracker (about a crime fighting part-time teacher)

Familiar Faces

Movie Actor Oliver Platt, Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers)

Our Take

Although the brief clip released by the network seems intriguing, there is no way to determine if it will hold up for an entire show (or, more importantly, an entire season).  Further challenging Deadline is the strength of CBS’ Monday night schedule and Deadline may very well become Dateline

Expect to Hear

Darlene (Benton’s Editor): “Twelve angry people convicted those guys, and by the way, it was a judge who sentenced them to death, not you”

Wallace Benton: “Well, I kinda lead the cheering section, you’ll recall”

Girlfriends
UPN: Monday at 9:30pm (Half Hour Sitcom)

Premise

A group of twenty-something urban women try to make it in the business world while also keeping their friendship together

Living Single without Tootie

Familiar Faces

<None>

Our Take

UPN has historically been placing last in the ratings on Monday night and this sitcom is not likely to change the trend.  On the other hand, their expectations are lower.  The key issue is whether or not this show lives up to their expectations

Expect to Hear

Joan:“You brought that man into my house – my last real boyfriend...I still go shopping with his Mom!”

Toni: “You said you were okay with this?”

Joan: “I lied!”
