Initially
a special operative with the DXS (Department of
External Services, a CIA type of organization),
ever since the second season, MacGyver worked
as a "troubleshooter" for Peter Thornton and the
Phoenix Foundation. His missions ranged from environmental
concerns (protecting endangered species) to international
intrigue (rescuing U.S. agents from foreign governments).
MacGyver refused to carry a gun and instead relied
on his own ingenuity and the ability to find unique
uses for seemingly ordinary objects.
Also
of interest, stealing an idea from the James Bond
movies, the producers involved MacGyver in a mini-adventure
(or Opening Gambit) before the credits during
a number of first season episodes.
