The
Battle of Tommy Giordano
|
Airdate:

|
Phoenix lab technician Mary Ruth Giordano is
involved in a bitter divorce with her husband
Richard. The key point in the dispute is custody
of their eight year-old son Tommy. After hearing
about Richard's verbal abuse of his wife, however,
the judge rules in favor of Mary Ruth. Richard,
displeased with the decision, then goes to his
uncle Joe Catano, the head of an organized crime
family, for help. Joe Catano responds by helping
Richard kidnap Tommy from Mary Ruth at an aquarium.
Mary Ruth in turn seeks help from fellow Phoenix
workers Pete and MacGyver. MacGyver and Mary
Ruth soon head towards Catano's house when Pete
discovers the relationship between Richard and
the mobster. Meanwhile, Paulie, one of Catano's
men, has decided to eliminate the mob boss as
Catano has refused to get involved in the drug
trade. After overhearing about the planned hit
on Catano, MacGyver sneaks into the mobster's
house. He then arrives just in time to save
Catano from Paulie. During the attempted murder,
Richard reveals his true colors when he tries
to run out on everyone (including his son).
Therefore, when Mary Ruth arrives, Catano decides
that she is the better parent, turns Tommy over
to her, and guarantees that Richard will never
bother them again.

MacGyver,
volunteering at the Challenger Boys and Girls
Club, finds himself involved when a local teen
named Ray is accused of stealing a truck from
a print shop. Meanwhile, Booker Wilson and his
wife Cynthia are appealing the city council
to maintain funding for the club. Their main
obstacle, however, is councilman Larson, the
print shop owner. MacGyver soon arrives at the
council hearing with Ray who testifies that
Larson, who had reluctantly hired him for a
job, had handed him the keys to the print shop
van and then accused him of stealing. After
the teen's testimony, the council dismisses
Larson's objections and votes to continue funding
the Challenger Club. Larson, displeased with
the council decision, then kidnaps and murders
Booker. Although Booker's murder looks like
a drug execution, MacGyver is doubtful. With
Ray's help, MacGyver soon traces a drug label
(found on Booker's body) back to the print shop.
Once there, they discover evidence proving that
Larson, actually a white supremist, is behind
the murder. In a complete turn around, the formerly
troubled Ray stops MacGyver from losing control
and taking revenge on a captured Larson. Later,
MacGyver learns that Cynthia plans on carrying
on Booker's work.

MacGyver and Pete are in a hotel for an aerospace
convention when they are approached by Crystal,
a teenage prostitute. MacGyver refuses her offer
but later offers her assistance when she ends
up in a trouble with an overzealous customer.
MacGyver further helps Crystal in eluding Snakeskin,
her pimp. He then takes the girl, who is a runaway,
to the Challenger Club. However, Crystal steals
MacGyver's wallet and returns to Snakeskin.
MacGyver soon follows and rescues the girl from
her angry pimp. The next day, MacGyver arranges
for Crystal, whose real name is Jennifer, to
see her father, police sergeant Reiner. Unfortunately,
Reiner argues with and hits his daughter and
Crystal/Jennifer once again flees to Snakeskin.
Fortunately, MacGyver arrives gust in time to
stop Reiner from killing the pimp. As the episode
ends, Cynthia arranges for father and daughter
to get some much needed counseling. Note: As
Jennifer tells MacGyver how she mistakenly blames
herself for her mother's death, the troubleshooter
reveals (via flashback) how he blames himself
for not being in the car when his Grandmother
and Father were killed in a car accident. He
also explains how he continually blames himself
for being away (in Afghanistan) when his mother
had a stroke and died. Jennifer realizes that
these two incidents are important in defining
MacGyver's ongoing fear of commitment.

In 1944, a plane went down with $100 million
in Russian gold and now, forty-five years later,
MacGyver is leading a US-Soviet expedition to
the Arctic circle to recover the plane (and
to use the gold for earthquake relief). Included
in the expedition are Russian General Barenov
and Natalie, a woman who had previously betrayed
MacGyver when she used a fake defection as a
ruse to steal some documents from him. The American
contribution to the expedition is Colonel (formerly
Lieutenant) Turk West, the only survivor from
the downed plane. The plane is discovered but
only one bar of gold is on board. While Natalie
and MacGyver begin to work on obtaining information
from a damaged Dictaphone, Turk begins to copy
down numbers from the remaining bar. He then
kills Barenov and causes an avalanche that traps
MacGyver and Natalie in the plane. MacGyver
and Natalie escape from the plane and follow
Turk to a nearby cave. Once inside, they discover
that Turk has been injured by a booby trap.
He forces MacGyver (at gunpoint) to bypass any
remaining traps. However, West's greed and impatience
triggers a cave-in and MacGyver and Natalie
barely manage to escape with the gold. In the
course of the episode, MacGyver realizes that
Natalie has changed.

MacGyver
is leading four Phoenix executives into the
wilderness as part of a project to stop the
invisible killer (stress). Meanwhile, the police
discover one of the Phoenix executive's bodies
while investigating the escape of some prison
convicts. Unfortunately, MacGyver, unaware of
the dead executive, has started the hike with
Phoenix executives Henry Colter, Dr. Fred Beam,
Tony Parisio, and Charles Lazarus. MacGyver
soon begins to suspect that something is wrong
when Lazarus displays acrophobia even though
the Phoenix files gives no indication that the
executive suffers from a fear of heights. However,
MacGyver's fears are soon proven correct when
Beam is found dead and Colter turns up missing.
Colter, who is actually prison escapee Mark
Fulton, then kidnaps a Forrest ranger named
Liz. MacGyver follows, frees Liz and captures
Colter/Fulton. Soon, Pete and the police have
found the body of a second Phoenix executive
and Lazarus, who is also an escaped convict,
shows his true colors and frees Colter. The
two criminals then corner MacGyver and Liz in
a fire tower. However, MacGyver uses his ingenuity
and the two convicts are soon captured.

Returning from a skiing trip, MacGyver and Pete
find themselves stranded on a roadway when MacGyver's
Jeep runs out of gas. MacGyver and Pete each
set out in different locations in order to find
a gas station. Unfortunately, a group of terrorists
are in the area and they soon capture Pete and
MacGyver and lock the two Phoenix employees
in a building basement. The terrorists then
capture a local TV station and threaten to electrically
cripple the city if their leader is not released
from prison. MacGyver and Pete escape from imprisonment
and, based on what they have seen, they realize
that the terrorists have stolen an EMP (electro-magnetic
pulse) generator that needs a great deal of
power to operate. The two Phoenix employees
then proceed to a nearby power plant. MacGyver
short circuits the device and captures the terrorists.
Later, the military arrives to take custody
of the criminals.

MacGyver and Pete both go to a Phoenix Research
lab in response to a request from their friend
Dr.Kozby. They are somewhat confused when they
arrive and find out that Kozby never sent any

that their arrival allowed a thief to enter
the building and steal a deadly bacteria. MacGyver
then recognizes the escaping thief as Steve
Morrison, a former Navy SEAL who has saved the
troubleshooter's life. The Phoenix troubleshooter
soon contacts Navy SEAL Commander Hilliard and
learns that Morrison suffered a head injury
and was discharged for displaying an altered
behavior pattern. Later, MacGyver saves the

Morrison left for Hilliard. Meanwhile, Morrison
has picked up his wife Marie and is meeting
with a man named Hans to discuss selling the
bacteria. Pete, MacGyver, and Hilliard soon

This episode blends scenes from previous episodes
with the story of an unknown assailant that
is stalking campers' MacGyver, Pete and Jack
Dalton. (Throughout most of the show, the paroled
convict's identity is kept hidden from the viewer.)
When Pete later turns up missing, the clips
switch from recalling different Jack Dalton
misadventures to displaying Murdoc's various
assassination attempts. Jack Dalton is soon
captured and the stalker is revealed as Deborah
(The Negotiator). Deborah then confronts
and tries to kill MacGyver. In the struggle,
Deborah goes over the side of a cliff. MacGyver
tries to save her but Deborah, concerned only
with revenge, stabs him. The troubleshooter's
grip loosens and Deborah falls to her death.
