The Death and Birth of a Network

  • For the first time in a decade, 2006/2007 will see the birth of a new network with the planned September launch of the CW. However, this “new” network is actually the merging of UPN and WB – including the best programming from each. Ownership of the CW will be equally shared between CBS (former owner of UPN) and Time Warner (former owner of the WB)
  • With a number of local stations losing their affiliation (since only one station in each market is becoming a CW affiliate),
  • FOX is capitalizing on the opportunity by creating their own new network: My Network TV. MNT will be programmed similar to Spanish-language stations Univision and Telemundo in that it will include serial telenovelas with a new part airing Monday to Friday each week (with summary episodes scheduled for Saturday). Each “serial” is scheduled to run for approximately thirteen weeks

Year-Round Drama

  • FOX found great success last year in delaying 24’s launch until January so that they could run an uninterrupted season with no repeats. They will be following the same trend this year in alternating between their serial dramas (24, Prison Break and Vanished ) so that they all can run nonstop without repeats
  • ABC will be following this strategy in airing Lost in two uninterrupted flights (Fall and Spring) with serial drama Day Break airing in between. NBC will also alternate ER and The Black Donnellys in the same time-slot
  • Of course, the FOX schedule also needs to change again in January with the annual return of American Idol
  • As in past years, shows with announced time-slots (even those not premiering until January) are in the indvidual day pages of the site. Shows without announced slots appear in the Mid-Season section
